Choice of the correct UN certified 4GV - 4DV box
Even if in the packing instruction is indicated the alphanumeric code 4G (fibreboard box), it does not mean that it is possible to use an ordinary UN certified 4G box for shipping the dangerous goods. In order to use a UN certified 4G box it is necessary that the inner packaging inserted is the same of that used during the tests, the one on the certificate of homologation. In case that the packaging has not been certified in combination with a UN 4G box, it will be necessary using UN certified 4GV boxes, fibreboard boxes certified for shipping any kind of inner packaging, for solids or liquids of packing group I, II or III. How to choose the correct 4GV / 4DV box? There are two simple steps to follow.
Step1: Choose the internal packaging with which you want to ship the dangerous goods
In order to proceed with the choice of the correct box it is necessary to have already identified the internal packaging to be shipped. For shipment in combined packaging, the internal packaging does not require approval marking. If shipping by IATA air, check that the inner packaging withstands the internal pressure difference as defined by the regulation).
Step 2: Choose the correct box
To choose the correct 4GV box it is necessary to verify that:
• the size of the internal packaging is less than or equal to the useful internal dimension of the box;
• if more inner packagings are inserted, the minimum distances between the same packagings must be respected;
• the gross weight of the inner packaging is less than or equal to the maximum gross weight indicator for that box;
• the gross weight of the package ready for shipment is less than or equal to the indicator weight for that box.
